Majlis Berbedak Mandi

Assalamualaikum, it is a pleasure to write on one of the vanishing traditions of Brunei Malay's wedding. Majlis Berbedak Mandi literally translated means 'Powdered and Shower Ceremony'.  The event marks the start of several ceremonies toward the actual wedding day. At the Berbadak Mandi' the bride or bridegroom will sit in the middle of a room surrounded by very close and elder family members from the mother and father's sides of the families. Led by the oldest family members (in some cases the parents), scented white powder would be applied to the open palms of the bride or bride groom. At the end of the ceremony as short prayer would be recited. The event concluded with the bride or bride would be given a shower (in private) by a 'pengangun' (literally an elderly chaperoned). For a bridegroom, this would be carried out by a close relative.

Say Hi To Madame

We are proud to introduce a new member of the Banamah's group of pets. Madame is a 7 years old female adopted by Dr. Siti Aishah binti Haji Mohammad Anas. Little was known of her previous history except that she was originally a stray and later adopted by an old lady (who passed away one and half year later), after which she moved to a cat shelter before the adoption by Dr. Siti Aishah.  Madame is now happily at home and residing in Sheffield UK.
